It's finally time, once again, to gather, cook, and eat together. This is the first Meal Magazine Dinner Party in what will be a regular event series -- like everyone, we have greatly missed face-to-face connection, and the particular sense of community that crackles and sparks when we gather around a table to share great food and conversation. With that in mind, we've invited Chef Jonathan Gans and Paul Hennessy -- both formerly of the late great restaurant The Bachelor Farmer -- to bring you a celebration of springtime in Minnesota with foraged and fire-cooked dishes by Gans, and a wide range of natural wine pairings from Hennessy.
Jonathan was a contributing writer for Issue 2 of Meal Magazine, penning three essays, each a very personal reflection at a different point on his 2020 journey from confronting the Covid-19 lockdown as executive chef of The Bachelor Farmer, to that restaurant's unexpected closure, and then his father's sudden need for daily medical care and feeding. These stories from Jonathan provided an intimate, first-person perspective throughout the magazine that reflected the shock and trauma that many of us experienced in different forms throughout that year.
A theme from Jonathan's essay about his dad, titled LOVE, ruminated on the intimacy of feeding his father in a time of great vulnerability and need, and how that act of love fed Jonathan. With that feeling in mind, this dinner party will be an intentional act of gathering around a big table after a long period of being unable to do so, passing plates of food made with care to each other family-style, and reveling in something we've greatly missed for many, many months: being together.
This dinner is sponsored in part by the fine folks at @rootstockwineco
